A Few Words About Sewer Rates

The Democratic majority on the South Windsor Town Council has been working for several years to keep taxes and spending as low as possible.

Therefore it has been quite upsetting to see new increases in sewer bills issued by the Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA).

Several years ago taxpayers approved a referendum for a new sewer treatment plant, and the Town Council Democrats played a key role in obtaining millions of dollars in state grants and very low interest Clean Water loans to support the project. The new sewer plant is vital to the town's economic development and to the health of our residents. The Town Council also played a vital role in working with the WPCA to reduce sewer fees.

However, this year's sewer fee of $340 is much too steep from our perspective.

We are concerned that this increase will have a serious negative impact on our community, especially low income seniors and those struggling with unemployment and other hardships.

In this economically challenging time, the Democratic candidates for Town Council believe there are opportunities for improvements and savings and intend to work closely with the WPCA to control expenses, encourage charging sewer fees based on actual usage, and make every effort possible to ensure sewer fees are stabilized.

We believe a clear, transparent and fair fee system needs to be developed to accomodate the needs of residential users, commercial users and industrial manufacturing operations.

We have already initiated our discussions with the WPCA to help formulate a plan for the future and to identify ways of stabilizing sewer fees for all of us while maintaining the integrity of the sewer system, one of the town's most valuable assets.
